On July 15th 2009 Alexandria Hope Carver was diagnosed with an aggressive form of blood cancer called AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). She had just turned 14 years old a month earlier.

She fought valiantly through five rounds of chemotherapy over a period of eight months. Each round lasting five to six days causing her immune system to be severely depleted requiring her to stay in the hospital for 28 to 30 days allowing her blood counts to recover enough to be able to go home for a couple weeks before returning to the hospital for the next round of chemotherapy.

Alex was like any teenage girl. She wanted to be at home with her family and friends having fun without a care in the world. But she was forced to practically live in the hospital and undergo grueling months of literally fighting for life. It was an extremely difficult battle. The setbacks and scares along those eight months are too many to list here, but to say that Alex was very strong and brave would be an understatement. She was heroic.

In March 2010 Alex was done with all her chemo treatments and was released from the hospital in complete remission. In April a celebration was held with family and friends to honor her victory over cancer. Just a couple weeks after the celebration, and only eight short weeks after being declared cancer free, she complained of severe pain in her neck and shoulder area. The doctors requested that she be brought back to the hospital for some tests and they discovered that she had relapsed and that a bone marrow transplant would be needed. Of course Alex and her family were devastated, but were determined to beat it again.

A bone marrow drive was held for Alex at the Anderson Mall to attempt to find a match that could save her life. Over 1000 gracious men, women, and children showed up to be put in the national registry in hopes of being the perfect match for Alex!

The doctors said that the cancer cells would have to again be in remission before the transplant could take place. During the time that she was being treated with chemo the national bone marrow registry was being searched to find a match. After the first round of chemo and a month long recuperation Alex was again tested and the doctors found that the chemo hadn’t reduced the cancer cells at all. So a second round would be necessary with a much stronger chemo drug to try to get her in remission. One day after the second round was complete her immunity was at zero. An infection caused her blood pressure to fall rapidly and she was quickly transferred to ICU. The doctors and nurses frantically fought for ten days to save her but Jesus was ready for Alex to come home.

On June 25th 2010 she went to Heaven where she’s as beautiful now as she was here on earth.
